Albums of the year - 2020


Now, before we begin : 

2020 has been a shit year for live music, but fantastic for recorded music (from a consumer point of view). Highlights like multiple Listening Parties (mainly on Twitter), some great virtual events/livestreams, and the Bandcamp Fridays which made me feel like I was helping to contribute a little back to the people who make the art which enriches my life and who are royally undervalued by Spotify and other giant Streaming Bastards. 

(that sentence, I thought it would never end ...)


I think I bought more music this year than since I was a teenager. (maybe more, thinking back, I had little income to invest in music back then).


Now - how to work out the albums of the year 2020 


well... these are my rules, you won't find them with Gallop 


So - first, the short-list. This will be a 13 album short-list. 

Based on the date of release, there will be 12 Albums of the Month (Jan , Feb, March , I mean I could go on ...) 

then ... a wildcard .. several times, its tough to pick only one album of the month, so one (and one only) runner-up makes the short-list. Of course, it won't win Album Of The Year (thats obvious, pay attention...) but it could be Runner-Up of the Year as well as the month, I guess ...  

13 albums it is  (decided on Friday 13th... )

Now , what type of albums are eligible , I hear you ask (I don't, actually...) well, as Americans in particular seem to say (don't write in saying thats racist ... its not) 'Great Question'. So, anything really : brand new albums, Best-Of's, Re-Issues, Live albums - whatever floats my boat ...

Other rules? well, I am trying to pick albums that I have bought (and this should work...) and not just heard. I buy CDs and sometimes downloads, I don't do vinyl (I get it ...I just like the fact that an album costs the same as it did 30 years ago, I can't afford the insane vinyl prices ... )

so the plan is to write a little intro/review (lets call it a 'blog post') for each of the 13 ... I don't plan to deeply review the music, with Spotify/Youtube, you can all immediately listen yourself, I'm assuming readers of my internet blog have internet access....

I going to start with January ... as you'll find out, I'm a traditionalist....

  ALBUM OF THE YEAR - SHORT-LIST .... ALBUM #13 - The 'wildcard' of  2020 I knew what I was getting into here. There were so many great albums coming out in the first six months of 2020, that the idea of 'an album a month' for the whole of 2020 seemed feasible. It worked out a bit harder to choose one every month (see August) than I thought, but it was also harder to pick only one some months. Especially March. March was mad...  The winner, if you recall, was Lewsberg. No regrets. However, for Slow Readers Club, Morrissey, and Baxter Dury, they all released great albums in March, and were unlucky not to get picked. That leads us to Mr Malkmus.  ALBUM OF THE YEAR - SHORT-LIST .... ALBUM #5 - May 2020 This might be a short entry ...  I don't have a whole lot to write about this band ... I've never seen them live , although I have heard them faintly... they played the 'bar' stage at the annual Wedding Present Brighton August festival (ATEOTS) in 2018 ... its a nice bar but not really ideal for live music and I decided to stay at the front of the main stage after Salad so I could say hello to Young Romance. I have no regrets, but if this album had been released then, I think I would have pushed into the crowds and braved the squeeze to see Jetstream Pony. So I have some regrets, I guess... This photo is taken just a couple of hours after hearing them ... Me in my Pip Blom t-shirt, well before their first album was out (told you I was hip, didn't I?) I got this album, pre-ordered as a digital download from Bandcamp on a Bandcamp friday, and actually released to me to download a week before the announced releas...

 Canshaker Pi albums in a fight to the death... So a new format, if you like ... well, I like it ... so maybe I will call this blog  RE-EVALUATE THE SONG going forward....  Basically, having a readership so close to zero to need a telescope to distinguish it, i want to get something out of my time ... so I am motivated to rate albums... especially in examples where I have bought a lot of albums from one artist in a short timeframe (capturing up after discovering them) . I am rating an artists work against that same artists other work ... I'm not going to try to decide if I prefer Dinosaur Jr to Frank Black, but I am going to decide which of their albums I prefer ... I probably won't include albums less than a year old, because I think that might sway the results .... I started with Canshaker Pi, because I love them, there's only 4 albums, and I wanted to test the format. So , results, and then the scores for individual songs.
